On-Site Oxygen Is Now a Strategic Decision, Not Just a Purchase
Across Africa, Southeast Asia and the Middle East, hospitals, gold mines, steel mills and water utilities are moving oxygen supply from delivered liquid to on-site generation. The first decision on any specification sheet is which adsorption platform to install. Two names dominate the shortlist: PSA (Pressure Swing Adsorption) and VSA / VPSA (Vacuum Swing Adsorption / Vacuum Pressure Swing Adsorption). Both use the same zeolite chemistry; they differ in scale, purity ceiling and how the sieve is regenerated.
Same Molecular Sieve, Different Physics
Both technologies separate oxygen from air using zeolite molecular sieve, which adsorbs nitrogen preferentially. Conventional PSA adsorbs at elevated pressure and releases nitrogen back to atmosphere. VSA adsorbs close to atmospheric pressure and regenerates under vacuum, shifting the duty from compression to a blower and vacuum pump combination.

Purity: PSA Goes Further Than Most Buyers Expect
Standard PSA oxygen leaves the adsorption vessel at 90–93% (±2%), meeting the purity requirement for medical oxygen pipelines and more than sufficient for cyanidation, aeration and combustion enrichment. With a downstream purification stage, the same PSA platform reaches up to 99.999% oxygen, opening electronics, laser cutting, ozone generation and aerospace applications. VSA typically delivers 90–95% and is optimised for volume; a second-stage module adds 99.5% aviation grade when required.
Where High-Purity Oxygen Is Used
- Metallurgy: the dominant segment of the high-purity oxygen market — steel decarburisation in ultra-low-emission electric arc furnaces, basic oxygen steelmaking and metal melting.
- Electronics and semiconductors: device fabrication, cleaning of special instruments and precision process steps.
- Chemical industry: reaction combustion support, modification of product molecular structure and oxidation reactions.
- Glass and building materials: replacing air in high-temperature melting to raise thermal efficiency and reduce energy consumption.
- Medical and healthcare: life support, disease treatment and hyperbaric oxygen therapy for decompression sickness, carbon monoxide poisoning and severe wounds.
- Other industrial uses: laser cutting, metal welding, food preservation such as fresh-meat colour retention, and the mining and refining of gold and other precious metals.
Matching the Platform to the Duty
This spread of applications explains why one purity figure cannot serve every project. Metallurgy, glass, chemicals and wastewater generally run on 90–95% oxygen in high volume, which is VSA territory: 10–8,000 Nm³/h, compact and largely unattended. Hospital pipelines, cylinder filling and small industrial sites sit at 3–200 Nm³/h, where skid-mounted PSA with PLC control starts within 30 minutes and is the standard answer. Semiconductor, laser, aerospace and hyperbaric duties need 99.5% or better, and therefore PSA with a downstream purification stage reaching 99.999%. Between roughly 200 and 800 Nm³/h both routes are viable, and the decision turns on load profile, power quality and site footprint.
What to Specify Before Ordering
- Purity against the process, not the brochure: 93±2% covers medical pipelines and most combustion duty; reserve 99.999% specifications for genuinely purity-critical processes.
- Turndown and duty cycle: state the minimum and maximum hourly demand; an oversized plant idles inefficiently and an undersized one never reaches nameplate purity.
- Dew point and outlet pressure: −40°C atmospheric dew point and 0.1–0.55 MPa cover most industrial and medical networks.
- Control and certification: PLC with remote monitoring, sound and light alarms, and for medical duty ISO 13485 certification of the manufacturing system.
A Practical Rule of Thumb
- 3–200 Nm³/h: choose PSA — compact, fast to start, simple to maintain.
- Above 800 Nm³/h: model VSA — vacuum regeneration holds specific energy steady as flow rises.
- 200–800 Nm³/h: evaluate both against the real load curve.
- Above 99.5% purity: add a downstream purification stage rather than oversizing the adsorption plant.
Conclusion
VSA and PSA are not competitors so much as two points on the same performance curve. The right choice is set by capacity, purity target, power quality and logistics distance — variables that can be modelled before a purchase order is issued.
